Fecal egg counts (FEC) provide us with valuable information that helps us evaluate the efficacy of dewormers being used and determine the best deworming treatment plan for your horse. Spring and Fall are peak transmission times. By doing a FEC during these times and following a deworming protocol, we can minimize pasture contamination and prevent parasitic disease and resistance.

The internship at Blue Ridge Equine Clinic offers comprehensive, hands-on exposure to a 24/7 equine referral hospital and ambulatory practice. Participants train under five experienced clinicians, a board-certified internist, two board-certified surgeons, and a skilled support team while managing a diverse caseload that includes advanced diagnostics, medical and surgical care, preventive medicine, sports medicine, and reproduction. Located near the Virginia Horse Center, the program emphasizes both hospital and ambulatory experiences. A rotating externship is also available, allowing veterinary students to assist with daily operations, diagnostics, surgeries, and farm calls, providing strong mentorship, practical clinical skills, and professional networking opportunities.
