Platelet Rich Plasma: E-PET Equine Platelet Enhancement Therapy (Pall Corp)

Platelet Rich Plasma (PRP) is a preparation made from autologous whole blood which is processed in a way that causes platelets and growth factors to concentrate. Platelets go to the site of injury and release many substances that promote healing, stimulate blood vessel formation, recruit endogenous stem cells, and control inflammation. The veterinarian can prepare PRP stall side for immediate use by taking blood from your horse and using a special filtration bag system. The PRP is then injection into the site of the injury, usually with ultrasound guidance. It is typically used in tendons and ligaments to help stimulate healing, but has also been used in joints. This particular PRP product has been shown to be a safe and effective treatment for suspensory branch injuries. (G. Castelijins et al., VetComp OrthopTraumatol 2011:24(5)363-9)
